Four (4) year apprenticeship NATURE OF TRADE:

Sheet Metal Workers fabricate and install ducts used in heating, ventilation and air conditioning. They also fabricate and install a wide variety of other products made of light or thin galvanized metals such as siding, metal decks, paint ovens, spray booths, gutters, flashing and dust collecting systems. The trade also includes products made from heavy or thick metals, which are welded (Stainless steel, aluminum, black iron) column guards, conveyors, blowpipe systems, spouts, and other items.


  • At least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Physically fit to perform work
  • Strong math skills
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Drug Screen
  • Upon being selected, an apprentice must apply and pay for, a State license through the Iowa Plumbing and

Mechanical Systems Board. The fee for this license is $50.


In addition to the training received on the job, an apprentice will attend 208 hours per year of related training, at our training facility. The related training will consist of, but will not be limited to:

  • Trade related math
  • Drafting
  • Pattern development and layout processes
  • System design (type and size of equipment and duct work).
  • Detailing (process of making blue prints to make sure the equipment and ductwork fit in a space without interfering with other crafts materials)
  • CAD (Computer- Aided Design)
  • Welding (All processes)

Classroom instruction takes place on Monday and Tuesday nights for the first-year apprentice students.

For second through fourth-year students, classes will be held on Saturdays, September through April.


An apprentices starting wage package will be 45% of the journeyman wage package, with incremental

increases throughout the apprenticeship. Apprentices receive such benefits as health insurance and national pension plan.


Applications are accepted year round, during regular business hours, which are 7:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday thru Thursday, and 7:00 am to 3:30 pm on Friday.

For a complete application, the applicant will need   a copy of birth certificate, high school transcripts or a passing GED equivalency certificate, and achieve a

Silver on the National Careers Readiness Certificate test. After a complete application has been submitted, the applicant will be notified as to an interview date, which are held quarterly.
